Cedar as been known for it’s extreme durability against decay and rot. In Canada, two types of cedar are used for siding and shingles.
Eastern white cedar and Western red cedar.
Although red cedar is very durable, it is less likely to be stained because of the natural fungicide contained in the wood. In comparison, eastern white cedar can easily be stained because it contains less of that same fungicide. Water-based stains are the most commonly used. Cabot and Peinture MF are two of the best stain producers for white cedar.
